SEMINAR: Polar Codes with Higher-Order Memory, by Dr. Hüseyin Afşer (June 16, 2017)
June 9, 2017
Asst. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Afşer from İstanbul Kemerburgaz University will give a seminar on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 14:00 in the Conference Hall of our department. The title of the talk is 'Polar Codes with Higher-Order Memory'.
All interested are invited.

The abstract and a short biography of the speaker are as follows.

Abstract
Polar codes are the first example of error correcting codes that provably achieve the capacity of arbitrary communication channels with low encoding and decoding complexity. In this talk, after briefly explaining polar codes, we present some real life applications. Then, we introduce polar codes with higher-order memory which are a new family of channel codes that generalizes the original one. This new family of channel codes also achieves the capacity of arbitrary channels and they can be used with lower encoding and decoding complexity.

Short Bio
Hüseyin Afşer received his BSc. and MSc. degrees in electrical and electronics engineering at Boğaziçi University in 2006 and 2008, respectively. He received his PhD degree from the same department in 2016. Since September 2016 he is working as an Assist. Prof. at Istanbul Kemerburgaz University. During 2006 and 2011 he worked in several R&D companies including Vestek (Vestel Technology) where he designed image processing algorithms on FPGAs and ASICs. His main interests are in the fields of telecommunications and information theory where he applies tools from information and probability theory to analyze the theoretical limits of different communication scenarios and designs systems that achieve these limits.
