ÖZET
Development of precise optical wavefront shaping and photonic material engineering modalities has led to the idea of identifying optical waves as information carrying units. For this purpose, our group has recently introduced the concept of diffractive neural network for performing sophisticated computational tasks, e.g. image classification, all-optically. Such networks are composed of diffractive surfaces located along the optical axis having free space sections between them. Spatial patterns of the surfaces that modulate light are first computed through a machine learning based training process. Then, determined surfaces are fabricated using a 3D printer in a cost- and time-effective manner. Since the computation in the testing stage is performed through optical waves, a given task is completed at the speed of light. In this talk, theoretical aspects, practical considerations, and application areas of diffractive neural networks will be covered with the emphasis on our group’s current state of the research. Future directions towards achieving optical computing units, which can be regarded as candidates for superseding conventional electronic processors, will be discussed, as well.
